Getting a clean edge
- Start with Range 40. That removes pure white and the near-white of most JPG compression.
- Look at the Mask view. Grey specks in the background mean Range is too low; holes in the subject mean it is too high.
- Soften with Edge. 20–40 keeps anti-aliased outlines smooth on dark or coloured slides.
- Check on black. A white halo is easiest to spot there. Raise Range a little or erase it with the brush.
When to use the AI method instead
The colour key works when the background is one flat colour. If the photo has shadows, a gradient, or the subject itself contains a lot of white, switch the method to AI subject: it separates the object by shape rather than by colour.
Questions
How do I remove a white background from an image?
Upload it here. The colour key starts on white and turns it transparent right away. Raise Range if light grey shadows stay; lower it if parts of the subject disappear.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Colour keying runs in your browser with the image already on your device. Only the AI method sends the file to our server.
What do Range and Edge do?
Range is how far a colour may differ from the key and still be removed (0–200). Edge adds a soft transition after that, so anti-aliased outlines don’t turn jagged. For crisp logos keep Edge low; for scans and photos raise it.
The white inside my logo disappeared too. What now?
The key removes the colour everywhere, not only around the subject. Paint the inner areas back with Refine → Brush → Restore, or switch the method to AI subject.
Can it remove a background that is not white?
Yes. Click Pick and then the background in the preview, or type a hex value. Black, green or any flat colour works the same way.
