What “transparent” means

Every pixel of a PNG has a fourth value next to red, green and blue: alpha, from 0 (fully see-through) to 255 (solid). A transparent background is simply the area where alpha is 0. Edges of hair, fur or glass get values in between, so they blend into whatever is placed behind them instead of showing a hard cut.

The grid behind the preview here is not part of the file; it marks the transparent area. Switch the view to Mask to see alpha directly: white is kept, black is removed, grey is partly transparent.

Where a transparent image works

  • Slides and documents: PowerPoint, Keynote, Word and Google Slides keep PNG transparency.
  • Web pages and shops: PNG or WebP over any page colour.
  • Design tools: Figma, Canva, Photoshop and GIMP open the alpha channel as a layer mask.
  • Not in JPG: the format has no alpha, so transparent areas become a solid colour.

Questions

How do I make the background of an image transparent?

Upload the image here. The AI removes everything behind the subject and the empty area becomes transparent. Download it as PNG or WebP; both keep transparency.

Why does my transparent image show a white background?

Many viewers draw white behind transparent pixels, and JPG cannot store transparency at all. Check the file on the grid view here, keep the format PNG, and place it on a coloured slide or page to see the effect.

PNG or WebP?

PNG works everywhere: Office, Google Docs, Canva, print shops. WebP is smaller and fine for websites, but some desktop tools still can’t open it.

Can I make only a white background transparent?

Yes. Switch the method to Colour key. It removes white (or any colour you pick) and leaves everything else as it is, which suits logos, icons and scanned drawings.

Will the image lose quality?

No. The colours come from your original file, only the transparency is added. The size stays the same up to 4096 px on the long side.
